De Colo heading to Austin (UPDATE: De Colo's Agent Responds)

Written by Jeff Garcia on .

UPDATE:

Nando De Colo's agent has responded to this report of him going to the Austin Toros on BasketUSA.com:

"It is only a game, explained his agent."

As we reported last month, Nando De Colo made it clear, he isn't thinking about playing in the D-League now that he has made it to the NBA.  Well it seems he may have to change his mind fast because the San Antonio Spurs have announced they sent him to their D-League affiliate Austin Toros.

The San Antonio Spurs today announced that they have assigned guard Nando De Colo to the Austin Toros of the NBA Development League.

De Colo has appeared in 13 games this season for San Antonio, averaging 2.5 points, 1.4 assists and 1.2 rebounds in 10.4 minutes.
His best outing was against Miami where he scored 15 points, handed out 5 assists, and grabbed 6 rebounds in 33 minutes of play. Clearly he can produce for the Spurs if given the minutes on the court. However, in last night's game against Memphis, Nando went scoreless and turned the ball over twice.
It is obvious Nando has the tools to make it in the NBA but he needs to develop more consistency and learn to run the team more efficiently. Moreover, he needs to work on taking care of the ball. Currently, he is averaging 1.4 assists to 1.2 turnovers. That is one horrible assist-turnover ratio.

Correcting all this and more is something he will get to do in Austin and not be buried on the Spurs' bench.

Nando will join Cory Joseph who was recently re-assigned to the Toros by the Spurs

No big deal here. Just a short stint, I wouldn't be surprised if he's sent down to play a couple more games with the Toros during the season. This is not because the Spurs don't want him, the Spurs want him (and Joseph) to stay in game shape. It's a huge benefit for the Spurs having a D-League team so close, please don't see this as a negative thing for De Colo.

Hi, in France, De Colo's agent said that it's just for one match with Austin. Instead of three days of practice Pop wants him to play a full game. He needs to take more shoots.

How many more undersized guys the Spurs will pick up? Decolo was playing in the euro league and suddenly signed by them only to assign him in the league. i think this is unfair. Allow him to go back.

That's too bad. I thought he would flourish in our lineup this season. This is PROBABLY not a good sign. Usually people who are sent down to the D-League, won't turn out to be that great of a basketball player. I mean, we may call him up a few times during the season, and he may have a big game somewhere down the road, but from what I've seen, many D-Leaguers today are having either bad or okay careers. I honestly believe this is our front office's fault. We wouldn't have done this if we didn't sign so many undersized guards over the past couple of years, and I still don't understand that. What's our pick in the 2013 Draft?? Does anyone know? Do we actually get a 1st round pick this time instead of the 2nd to the last of the draft like last time? It better not. We better draft a big guy next summer or I'll be pissed. No, actually what I want now is for us to trade Blair and/or Bonner for another big guy during the season, or when the league trades happen. I can't believe I'm saying this, but Anderson Varejao looks pretty good right now. I thought we were interested in Patrick Patterson from Houston?? I read somewhere, on a spurs affiliated website, that we were VERY interested in Patterson and we were willing to give up Neal or Bonner, something like that.

Hang in there Nando.  Terrific player, great hustle, and he is going to be a very good guard in the NBA.  He just has to catch on to some basics of the Spurs system.  He certainly has some skills.  In Austin he will get the floor time he is lacking and get the turnovers under control.  Those turnovers kills Pop lead teams.  Work hard and come back soon, SA Spurs needs you for this year and more.  Needs to learn Pop's defense required skills.  Rooting for you Nando!

I hope he does really well in Austin so the Spurs can pick him up later in the season. He plays great D and could be a great energy guy off the bench.
